Reef Joint Field Management Program - Know Your Zone
Marine zoning is only effective if people understand it.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s zoning framework protects biodiversity, supports sustainable fishing, and ensures long-term ecological health. Yet for many recreational fishers and reef users, zoning can feel complex, technical and distant from everyday decision-making.
Know Your Zone was developed as an annual public education campaign to translate regulation into clarity and encourage voluntary compliance at scale.
Rather than relying on enforcement language alone, the campaign focused on accessibility. The objective was simple: make it easier for reef users to understand where they are, what rules apply, and how to avoid costly mistakes.
Creative executions centred around clear visual mapping cues, practical calls to action and digital tools, including promotion of zoning maps and the Eye on the Reef app. Messaging balanced consequence with stewardship, reinforcing that knowing the rules protects both the individual and the ecosystem.
Campaign collateral included compliance booklets, press advertising, printed assets, digital advertising including social media, bus back placements, and a purpose-built image library designed to support ongoing Authority communications.
The visual approach prioritised clarity over clutter, using strong colour coding, simplified geographic references and direct language to reduce cognitive load in high-pressure recreational environments.
Vetta Creative delivered creative execution across print, outdoor and digital channels, managing design, asset development and campaign rollout materials in alignment with Reef Authority guidelines.
As an annual refresh campaign, Know Your Zone required creative adaptation year-on-year to maintain relevance while preserving recognisable campaign equity.
While offence detection fluctuates annually due to patrol intensity and seasonal factors, long-term compliance trends demonstrate improvement. Commercial fishing offences have reduced significantly over a five-year period, and recreational compliance continues to be supported through increased public awareness and digital tool adoption.
In parallel, ecological reporting indicates strong evidence that protected Green Zones are delivering intended conservation outcomes, with Coral Trout biomass significantly higher in no-take zones and positive spill-over effects supporting adjacent fishing areas.
Community engagement through digital monitoring tools has also increased, with thousands of marine encounter sightings submitted via the Eye on the Reef platform.
Know Your Zone demonstrates how clear, accessible public communication supports regulatory compliance, strengthens public trust, and contributes to measurable environmental outcomes within complex marine management frameworks.
